Yep, Im obviously new here. Since I saw this site only a few weeks ago, I've now become a leech for all things youkai. I lived for a month in Japan with a host family back in 1998. It was awesome. And I got to see the first Pokemon movie before all you other youkai buffs. Haha. Okay, so I know that's not *that* wonderful. But I did manage to buy a paper Tanuki statue for only 50 yen. And I saw Gegege no Kitarou on t.v. in Japanese. I loved that show back when I first saw it, and I'm happy to re-discover it on here. Konnichiwa to everyone!

Does the paper tanuki statue have inflatable balls? Now *that* would be something... Anyway, welcome.

Unfortunately, no. I bought it at a family carnival/festival. He came with a cute lil hat and a message around his neck in Japanese that I can't read, though. Maybe I'll take a pic of him and show it on here. By the way, if anybody knows the area, I stayed in Kumamoto city. I also saw a Kwaidan t.v. show that mentioned the youkai that lives in school bathrooms, youkai trees with faces on the branches, and Kuchisake-onna.

The bathroom youkai is definately Hanako no oire. It has the shape of a school girl and lives behind every third door in the girls toilet room. If you call her name three times she will appear and drag you into the toilet. She is some kind of urban legend from japan

In America, we have something similar named Bloody Mary. *no, not the drink!* If you say "Bloody Mary" three times in the mirror, a girl covered in blood and scars appears. Then she either cuts your face (like Kuchisake i guess) or pulls you into the mirror with her.

It sounds a littlebit like Candyman`s curse and I think Clive Barker, the author of the story, was inspired by that. http://www.answers.com/topic/candyman-film
