Suppon-no-yūrei
鼈の幽霊 (すっぽんのゆうれい)
Soft-Shelled Turtle Ghost
other names:

The stewed meat of the soft-shelled turtle, or suppon, has long been a popular delicacy
in Japan, and has also been attributed with various medicinal qualities over the years. But those
who overindulge in this species' flesh may find themselves confronted by its resentful ghost.

In the Edo period, three men who lived in Nagoya always had turtle with their saké. One day when
they went to buy some more, the suppon dealer who greeted them had a face like a turtle, and
ghostly legs that trailed off into nowhere.

The men ran home, and could not stop shivering for three days. They never ate suppon again.1
